Solar Electric PV Grid Tied Systems

SOLAR ELECTRICITY BASICS

Photovoltaic/Solar Electricity
Solar cells, also called photovoltaic (PV) by solar cell scientists, convert sunlight directly into electricity. They are made of semi-conduction materials similar to those used in computer chips. When sunlight is absorbed by this material, the solar energy knocks electrons loose from their atoms, allowing the electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity. This process of converting light (photons) to electricity (voltage) is called the photovoltaic (PV) effect. Today the (PV) solar electric industry is growing at a rate of 30% annually. Spiking energy costs, along with State and Federal incentive programs are rapidly accelerating the affordability and wide spread use of PV systems on homes and businesses.

HOW YOUR SOLAR ELECTRIC SYSTEM WORKS

How Solar Power Works

Sunlight strikes the panels of your solar system and a flow of (DC) direct current electricity is produced by the solar cells. The solar generated (DC) electricity is fed into an inverter that converts it into household grade (AC) electricity. The (AC) electricity feeds into your main electrical circuit breaker panel from which it supplies power to your house. Your main electric panel is also connected to a specially installed bi-directional meter, this meter is connected to the utilities electrical grid, which is the utilities means of delivering electricity. This allows household grade electricity to flow into your home or business from the power company. On days when your solar electric system generates more power than you use, your utility meter will actually spin backwards. You receive credit from your utility company for the electricity you produce at the same kilowatt hour rate that they charge you, this is referred to as “net metering”. It’s that easy. Your solar electric/photovoltaic grid-tied system operated automatically and quietly. The system “wakes up” and begins to deliver power as soon as the sun rises and “goes to sleep” as the sun sets.

What is the difference between a grid-tied and grid-tied with batteries?

A Grid-tied PV system with batteries provides the same benefits as a grid tie system without batteries. In addition, this system will provide limited electricity if the grid fails, since the battery back up system does not produce power for everything in the home or business, a “critical load” panel is set up to provide emergency power to important devices and circuits. The battery back up system will respond immediately to a power failure and provide emergency electricity for your critical loads.
